The Challenge

Invent an Internet of Things (IoT) product and app. Research competitors, your user, and the technology that is used by the product. Prepare a presentation to convince key stakeholders to invest in your invention. Create a brand look and feel, develop packaging, make wireframes and prototypes, and do at least one round of user testing. Find a way to make a prototype of your physical device.

The Solution

We wanted to give people more control over their dental health so we created a smart toothbrush that has bluetooth technology to wirelessly connect to your smartphone. The toothbrush stand doubles as a charging stand for your iPhone, and also has speakers. While you’re brushing you get a visual of the plaque as you’re removing it, in real time. When you start brushing, the digital rendering of your teeth is blue. As you’re removing plaque the blue fades and becomes more transparent. Once your teeth are clear, the plaque is gone. Feedback from the app lets you know how you’re doing and tips on how to improve your brushing. Along with the plaque detection brushing head, there is a cavity detection head that checks your teeth for cavities. BrushSmart can also connect you with your dentist and share your brushing records and cavity detection.

For the look and feel of the app, we decided to go with a bright and clean aesthetic, as many people fear the dentist. We wanted the app to convey friendliness, cleanliness, and safety. My partner and I made two prototypes, one simple and one complex, and did two rounds of user testing. We created user personas and created a customer journey map and an empathy map so that we could better understand our user. We designed the toothbrush and base and commissioned a Photography student, Tim Harding, to make a 3D rendering of the toothbrush and stand from our drawings.
